Thalassa (Θαλασσα)

Roman Name: Mare

Translation: Sea

The Sea Herself

Thalassa is the embodiment of the sea, born from Gaia to be the life sustaining liquid needed by all creatures big and small. She has a male counterpart, Pontos (Sea), with whom she shares many qualities such as the crab claw-like horns, and her hair massive and wavy like his beard. She, unlocking Pontos, is said to have an actual body that is always submerged in the water, and her clothes made of seaweed. She and Pontos were known as King and Queen of the sea, and were so for many centuries.

Family Ties; Thalassas' mother is Gaia, and male counterpart Pontus. She has had ten children, nine of which were called Tenchines (Demons/Wizards of sky related waters such as hail, rain, and storms) and thought to be the first inhabitants of Rhodes Island, and a daughter, Halia (Sea Nymph and Lover of Poseidon).

Tributes; Many symbols of Thalassa include the things that are visually associated with her, like crab-claw horns, seaweed for clothes, and a ship's oar in her hand.
