Atlas (Ατλας)

Translation: Endures

Titan of Endurance and Holder of the Sky

Atlas is the titan of dears, endures, and the holder of the sky. Atlas was the leader of the Titans in the war against Zeus, because of this he was punished and sentenced to hold up the heavens for all eternity on his shoulders. He is also known as the guardian of the pillars, and the teacher of astronomy to mankind. Because he is the god of astronomy and holding the sky, when he turns so do the stars and the sky, he is the reason the world turns around.

Atlas and Heracles;

When Heracles faces his 12 labors challenges, he has to steal the golden apple from the garden of Zeus. He sought the help of the guardian of this garden Atlas, by the advice of Prometheus, with whom he had helped free from his imprisonment. When Heracles asked for entry he was met with Atlas booming voice "No mortal shall enter the garden." Came, not permitting Hercules to enter "I would go for you... but I am stuck here holding up the sky." Atlas baited. "What if I was to hold the sky for you?" Heracles offered, desperate to complete his tasks and repent for the fate he caused for his wife and children. But he was not stupid, he knew that Atlas would not want to return to his post, "Hey Heracles! Your really good at holding that up! How about I return these golden apples to the king for you." Atlas offered, hoping to trick Heracles and make an easy escape. "Yeah, I guess I am pretty good at this. That sounds like a great idea! You return the apple while I hold this a little longer, because you're coming back right?" Heracles pretended to go along. "Yes, Yes child I'm going to return." Atlas lied. "Ok, you won't mind holding the world for a second more, my mortal shoulders aren't built for this, I'm going to quickly put some cotton pads on them and I'll take it right back." Heracles asked innocently. "Sure little human, ill hold that for a second." But as soon as Atlas took the sky's back from Heracles, the golden apple was snatched from his arms as Heracles made a mad dash away from Atlas for his escape. "Thank you for all your help Atlas! Good luck holding up the sky's!!!" Heracles called to Atlas. "Come back here Mortal! You tricked me, you little monster!" Atlas called in anger from being tricked.
