Muses (Μουσα)

Roman Name: Musae

Translation: Of Song

Goddess of Literature, Science and Arts

The Muses were Zeus daughter goddess of music, song and dance, and the source of inspiration to poets, knowledge, who remembered all things that had come to pass. Eventually each of the Muses were assigned a subject to rule over.

Thaleia (Thalia), comedy;

Melpomene, tragedy;

Polymnia (Polyhymnia), religious hymns;

Erato, erotic poetry;

Euterpe, lyric poetry;

Terpsikhore (Terpsichore), choral song and dance.


Family; The Muses’ parents Zeus and Mnemosyne. Their siblings are each other. They have three children collectively, they are; Hyacinth, Kleophema, and Korybantes.


Tributes; Each of the Muses have their own symbols.

Kalliope; Writing tablet, Stylus, Lyre.

Kleio; Scrolls, Books, Cornett, Laurel wreath.

Ourania; Globe and compass.

Thaleia; Comic mask, Shepherd's crook (the vaudeville act of pulling someone off the stage with a hook is a reference to Thalia's crook), Ivy wreath.

Melpomene; Tragic mask, Sword (or any kind of blade), Club, Kothornos (boots).

Polymnia; Veil, Grapes (referring to her as an agricultural goddess).

Erato; Cithara (an ancient Greek musical instrument in the lyre family).

Euterpe; Aulos (an ancient Greek musical instrument like a flute), panpipes, laurel wreath.

Terpsikhore; Lyre, Plectrum.
